Born in Basel, Switzerland, Hans Gustav Burkhardt moved to New York in 1924. He enrolled in art at the Grand Central School of Arts and eventually relocated to Los Angeles in 1937. Burkhardt’s work drew intentionally from nature and significant events, creating emotional but structured Abstract Expressionist motifs. His work is featured in numerous collections including the Palm Springs, La Jolla, Long Beach, Santa Barbara and Oakland Art Museums, as well as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Worcester Art Museum and the Norton Simon.
