A monumental oil painting on canvas titled Girl Combing Her Hair by celebrated American artist George Segal (1924 – 2000), dated 1956. Created before the artist turned to sculpture, this figural work is representative of the artist’s early Expressionist style, rendered with large gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colors. Signed, titled, and dated to the verso, the work is presented in a simple wood frame.
George is most well-known for his haunting life-size figural sculptures cast from life by wrapping models in plaster bandages. However, he began his art career as a painter in the Expressionist style. The artist studied at Cooper Union, the Pratt Institute, and New York University under Tony Smith and William Baziotes. In the late 1950s, the artist hosted an art picnic at his farm, and it was at this event that Allan Kaprow his famous performance art term ‘Happenings’ to describe the art that was being created. It wasn’t until around 1961 that the artist started creating his signature sculptures. Segal’s work has been collected and exhibited by multiple institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
