A late 20th century oil painting on canvas titled Birth of Purple by Korean-American artist Po Kim (1917-2014). This monumental work is rendered in an Abstract Expressionist manner, featuring an abyss of splattered and dripped bleeding pigments in various vibrant hues. The work is signed to the lower left and to the canvas verso. The title is also inscribed to the canvas verso. The composition is presented in a simple wood frame with a gold-tone liner.

Po Kim was among a generation of Korean artists who emigrated to the United States in the 1950s. He eventually moved to New York during the peak of the Abstract Expressionist movement, which deeply impacted his work. In New York, he and his wife established the Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery, a foundation that still exists today. His work has been collected and exhibited internationally by numerous institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, the Seoul Art Center, and the Gwangju Museum of Art, among others. As a tribute to Kim and his wife, he Chosun University Art Museum established the Po Kim and Sylvia Wald Art Museum, which houses more than 300 works by Kim.
