An etching with drypoint on laid paper titled Le Marchand D’Habits by well-listed French artist Jean Francois Raffaelli (1850 – 1924), created in 1895. Published in Gustave Geffroy’s La Vie Artistique (1892–1903), this work is initialed ‘R’ in plate to the lower left. It is presented under glass in a carved wood frame with a copper-tone finish and a canvas liner. A descriptive label is adhered to the verso.

Associated with the Realist and Impressionist artists, Jean Francois Raffaelli studied at the famed Ecole des Beaux Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome. He was considered a Realist due to his depictions of marginalized populations and his interest in the modern socio-political conditions in Paris. However, the artist later established a relationship with several Impressionists such as Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Mary Cassatt, with whom he shared a love for color etching. In 1876, he started creating etchings which began his notable experimentations with color etching and his devotion to printmaking. Raffaelli regularly exhibited his work at the Paris Salons until his death, while maintaining an advocacy for alternative exhibitions, including those of the Impressionists. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous prestigious institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay; the Louvre; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; among many others.
