A late 19th century oil painting on board by well-listed Dutch-born artist William Frederick Hulk (1852 – 1906). Portrayed in a realist manner, this work features a signature subject of the artist with grazing cows in a rural landscape. The work is signed ‘WF. Hulk’ to the lower left and is presented in a Louis XV style gilt and gesso frame. A handwritten descriptive label to the verso provides some information about the artist.

Dutch-born artist William Frederick Hulk was a notable rural landscape painter who came from a family of artists including his father Abraham Hulk, Sr. (1813 – 1897); his brother Abraham Hulk, Jr. 1851-1922); and his uncle Johannes (John) Frederick Hulk (1829 – 1911). During his life, he exhibited his work at prestigious instituions such as the British Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the New Watercolour Society. Adopting England as his home at a young age, he lived in Guildford where he painted scenes of the countryside that often exhibited cattle and serene plays of light. Hulk’s work has been collected and exhibited by multiple museums and galleries including the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, and the Haworth Art Gallery, among others.

Condition

- repaired abrasion to upper left of painting; board is slightly warped; small spots of paint loss scattered throughout, especially visible along edges and lower right; some rubbing along board edges; minor wear scattered throughout frame.
