An early 20th century oil painting on canvas by well-listed Spanish artist and muralist Julio Vila y Prades (1873-1930). This outdoor genre scene features a man and a woman engaging outside a straw hut. Signed to the lower right, the work is presented in a composite wood frame with a black finish and a gold-tone liner.

Julio Vila y Prades studied with Francisco Domingo Marqués and Joaquín Agrasot at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. From 1893 to 1904, he worked for renowned Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla as an apprentice in his workshop. Vila traveled to various countries in South America, and received multiple commsions in Argentina, including the ceiling of the Tigre Club, and murals at the Plaza Hotel and the Tucumán Government Palace. Other large commissions that he painted include the ceiling of the new Gran Kursaal de San Sebastián (since demolished) located in Spain, and a mural for the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, among others. In 1928, the artist was awarded the Order of the Sun by the Peruvian government.

Condition

- small repaired puncture to middle right area of canvas; small area of inpainting surrounding repaired puncture; minor rubbing and paint loss along painting edges; faint stretch marks near edges of painting;painting is slightly loose in frame and needs securing; some wear in frame includes scratches, stains, and finish loss scattered throughout.
