An early 20th century oil portrait on canvas by Ohio Rookwood artist William Purcell McDonald (1863 – 1931). This work features a profile view of a seated young woman. It is signed to the lower right and presented in a gilt gesso and wood frame. The artist’s name is inscribed to the foam core backing affixed to the verso.

William Purcell McDonald studied with Frank Duveneck (1848 – 1919) at the Cincinnati Art Academy and was a member of the Cincinnati Art Club. He was a celebrated painter and sculptor for Cincinnati’s Rookwood Pottery Company, where he headed the architectural department from 1904 until his death. McDonald’s work can be found in numerous private collections and public institutions such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.
