Thomas Gibson was born in England in 1680 and was an established portrait painter by the age of thirty-one. Though little is known about his artistic training, Gibson was appointed founding director of Godfrey Kneller’s Academy due to his practice. He was well-known for his paintings and copies, which attracted prestigious sitters such as the archbishops John Potter and William Wake.
