An oil painting on canvas titled View on the 5 Mile Road by listed American artist Thadeus Defrees (1855 – 1888), dated 1886. Created two years before the artist’s death, this work features a dirt road winding through a countryside landscape, portrayed with meticulous brushwork. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right. An inscription to the canvas verso reads ‘View on the 5 mile road / Jackson. N.H. / by T Defrees. 1886.’ A framer’s stamp is also marked to the canvas verso. The painting is presented in an antique gilt and gesso frame with elaborate foliate molding.
Born in Boston, Thadeus Defrees studied under Frank Shapleigh (American, 1842-1906) in New Hampshire. He is particularly known for his landscape paintings that exhibit the influence of the French Barbizon School. Active in the White Mountains, he was an artist-in-residence at the Thorn Mountain House and exhibited his work at the Boston Art Club.
