A mid 19th century copy oil painting on canvas titled The Samian Sybil by well-known master copyist Michele Cortazzi (Italian; 1800 – c.1865). This large-scale Neoclassical painting is a copy after a work by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, also known as Guercino (1591-1666). The sybil holds an open book with an inscription that reads ‘SALVE CASTA / SYON PERMV / LTAQVE PASS / PVELLA. / SYBILLA SAMIA’, which can be translated to ‘Hail chaste Syon, Maiden that hast endured much suffering.’ The painting is signed and inscribed ‘fece in Firenze’ to the canvas verso. It is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame with foliate molding and undulating edges.
Active in the mid 19th-century, painter and copyist Michele Cortazzi had a studio on the Via del Corso in Rome. Although not much information is recorded about the artist, it is known that he copied paintings of several Italian Masters including Raphael, Titian, and Alessandro Varotari also known as ‘Il Padovanino’ (1588–1641), among others.

- to fair; spots of in painting throughout composition; spots of paint chipping scattered throughout, especially concentrated to upper left of book; stretcher marks throughout; considerable craquelure throughout; abrasion present to upper left; wear in frame includes chips, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
