This lithograph by C.R.W. Nevinson was designed for The Studio magazine’s special forty-year edition titled Special Birthday Number 40. It was created at a time when Britain was recovering from the traumatic effects of the First World War. The country was looking ahead to an uncertain future as it was the same year Hitler and the Nazi’s were gaining control in Germany. The setting portrayed in the print is situated on the seventh floor of the studio that belonged to author and journalist Sisley Huddleston. Venus de Milo is set in the center, surrounded by painting supplies, war weaponry, skyscrapers, and airplanes in the distance. In similar works titled Twentieth Century and Asters, Nevinson often featured iconic sculptures, such as Rodin’s The Thinker, surrounded by modern imagery.
Christopher Richard Nevinson (C.R.W.) was a famed British war artist who studied at the Slade art school with Mark Gertler, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Maxwell Gordon Lightfoot, John Currie, Edward Wadsworth, Rudoloh Ihlee, Adrian Allinson and Dora Carrington. Influenced by the Italian Futurists and Cubists, and Vorticist themes, he was appointed an official war artist in 1917 and pioneered modern themes in British printmaking. Nevinson was particularly known for portraying the horrors and mechanical nature of modern war in a Futurist style. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous institutions including the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Yale Center for British Art, among others.
