Item Details

Gustav Wolff (Germany/Missouri/New York, 1863 – 1935)
Untitled (landscape with windmills), late 19th/early 20th century
Oil on canvas
Signed to lower right

An oil painting on canvas by well-listed German-American painter Gustav Wolff (Germany/Missouri/New York, 1863 – 1935), completed around the turn of the century. This Tonalist work depicts a windmill situated on the banks of a quiet body of water, surrounded by farmland and small-town buildings. The painting is signed to the lower right and is presented in an antique wooden frame, likely original to the piece, with cast moulding and a gilt finish.

Wolff’s family immigrated to the United States 1866 from Berlin, Germany, settling in St. Louis where Gustave studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under prominent artists including Paul Cornoyer, F. Humphrey Woolrych, and Frederick Oakes Sylvester. Wolff was one of St. Louis’ best-known artist in the early 1900s, and became particularly well-known for his Tonalist landscape paintings.
