Stamp from Cincinnati Museum Association to the verso

A drypoint etching on paper titled The Rialto Bridge, Venice by well-listed artist Frank Duveneck (American; 1848 -1919). This print depicts a detailed rendering of the famed Rialto bridge spanning the busy Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. The work is unsigned and the verso is marked with a stamp reading ‘Cincinnati Museum Association, printed by H.H. Wessel’ referring to Herman Henry Wessel (Ohio/Indiana; 1878 – 1969). This work is presented behind an off-white mat, under glass, in a wood frame with a dark gold-tone finish.

Frank Duveneck was born in 1848 in Covington, Ky and was apprenticed as a teen to German-American artists who decorated Catholic churches. In 1869, he studied abroad at the Royal Academy of Munich where he mastered the school’s bravura brush technique and darker palette. He returned to Cincinnati where his work began to receive attention, then once again traveled to Munich where he opened a school in 1878. His students Twachtman, Otto Bacher and Herman Wessel, to name a few, became known as the “Duveneck Boys”. In 1889, after the tragic loss of his wife, Duveneck returned again to the United States where he chose to live a quiet life in Covington, Kentucky and teach at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Frank Duveneck’s paintings can be found in many prestigious private collections, as well as the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Richmond Art Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Kenton County Library in Covington, Kentucky.
