An original acrylic folk art painting with applied hair accents on found wooden panel by very well-listed American Outsider artist Mose Tolliver (Alabama; 1925 – 2006). The painting depicts a self-portrait of the artist in Tolliver’s signature naive style and flat color. He is standing with the aid of crutches, and hair (possibly the artist’s own) has been applied across the figure’s head. This work is signed to the lower edge. It is presented without framing and is ready to hang with a pop-top ring to the upper edge.
Born in Alabama, self-taught Outsider artist Mose Tolliver began painting after a work accident left his legs severely injured. He is known for his brightly colored compositions featuring simplistic forms and shapes often portraying abstract figures, animals, and nature. His works have been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, among other institutions
Condition
- cracks and wear across lower edge of wood panel. Abrasions to lower right edge. Scattered areas of light accretion.
