Lewis Henry Meakin Oil Painting "Landscape at Sunset"

Item Details

Lewis Henry Meakin (American, 1850 – 1917)
Landscape at Sunset
Oil painting on board
Signed to lower right

An oil painting on board by very well-listed English-American painter Lewis Henry Meakin (1850 – 1917), titled Landscape at Sunset. The painting depicts a glowing yellow sunset that fills the sky above a shadowy valley below. Rolling hills mark the horizon line, and shrubby plants dot the scene below. The painting is signed to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with black and gold tone finishes and a hanging wire.

Born in England, Meakin actively worked in Ohio, Massachusetts and Germany, and is considered a figure painter, painter, landscape painter and etcher, producing a wide range of work. His initial training was at McMicken School of Design, with later training in Munich with frequent trips to picturesque spots. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he spent many years as faculty at The Art Academy. During one of his several exhibits at The Art Academy, Meakin commented on his intellectual art conception, professing that it took ‘an imagination to see a picture as well as to paint one.’ Meakin’s own vision helped him to grasp light and color, and his personal joy is portrayed in his art.

Meakin’s works are represented in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Indiana State Museum, as well as in many private collections.
