An oil painting on academy board by listed artist Arthur B. Carles Jr. (Pennsylvania; 1882 – 1952). This still life painting features a top hat resting casually atop a sculpted bust, set on a table in front of layered artwork leaning against the wall, and next to a wine bottle and art supplies. This Realist work is rendered in painterly brushwork and a bold complimentary palette. It is signed to the lower right. This work is housed in a gold-tone wood frame with cast embellishment, and is equipped to hang. A fragment of a handwritten letter from 1945, addressed to the artist and regarding an exhibition, is present to the verso as well as a label from Schneider & Co., Inc. and a card indicating conservation work done by Collector’s Art Group, Cincinnati.

Carles was born in Philadelphia and studied, and later taught, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His artistic style continued to evolve throughout his career, and he was influenced by the avant-garde art movements of his time, including Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Fauvism. He is considered one of the preeminent American Abstract Expressionists, painting increasingly abstract compositions later in his career, using the powerful, aggressive brushwork that would become the hallmark of the movement in the 1950s. During his career his work was included in several ground-breaking exhibitions, including Younger American Paintersat Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery 291 in New York and the 1913 New York Armory Show. His work resides in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Newark Museum, New Jersey; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
