Jimmie Sudduth Outsider Painting of Figure (Self-Portrait)

Item Details

Jimmie Sudduth (Alabama; 1910 -2007)
Untitled (self-portrait)
Paint and mud of found wood panel
Signed to upper edge

A painting on panel by well-listed American folk artist Jimmie Sudduth (Alabama; 1910 -2007), painted using mud and paint. This naive untitled portrait depicts the artist wearing overalls and a square hat as he stands against a minimalist white background. The portrait is signed to its upper edge and is presented without framing. A hanging wire is attached to the piece’s verso.

Sudduth’s earliest memories of painting involve using honey, earth pigments and other found materials to paint in the forest while his mother, a Native American herbalist, foraged for medicinal plants. He continued to paint for his entire life, during most of which he worked grinding corn in rural Alabama. His first exhibition was organized in 1972, and Sudduth went on to become a highly recognized folk artist whose works are included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art and the American Museum of Folk Art in New York.
