A large oil painting on canvas titled Fruits, Pain et Eau (Fruit, Bread and Water) by listed French artist Charles Levier (1920-2003). This painting features a still-life with a fruit, bread, and a jug of water sitting on a table before an open window. It is rendered with broad strokes of a palette knife and muted hues. It is signed to the upper right and to the verso along with the title. This painting is presented in a giltwood frame.

Born in Corsica in 1920, Levier first studied art at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. During the war, he served in the French Army in North Africa, later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. Levier’s first one-man show was held at the Galerie Constantine in Lyons (1949). This was followed by his American debut in Los Angeles (1950).

Charles Levier’s work is held in the permanent collections of numerous national museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Menton Museum in Paris, the Atlanta Museum and the San Diego Museum. Among the notable collectors of Levier’s work can be numbered Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, and Dean Martin among others.
