An oil painting on canvas by well-listed American artist Matthew Daly (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1860 – 1937), completed circa 1930. This painting depicts a quiet street in the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts, rendered in Daly’s signature Impressionistic style. This work is signed to the lower right. It is mounted in its original Craftsman carved wood frame with a dilapidated gold tone finish, and the location of the scene inscribed to the stretcher.
A Cincinnati native, Daly studied under Thomas S. Noble and Vincent Nowottny at the McMicken School of Design. As he increasingly turned to portraiture and the human figure as his primary subjects, he later studied under the formidable Frank Duveneck. When Duveneck left Cincinnati in the 1870s, Daly remained and worked as an artist for the Rookwood Pottery Company for 20 years, while continuing to create paintings and participate in exhibitions. He died at his easel at the age of 77.
