An oil painting on canvas titled Self-Portrait: Seated with Hat by listed artist Wilder M. Darling (Ohio/Holland; 1856 – 1933). This painting depicts the artist seated in a simple interior, legs crossed and reading a paper, loosely rendered in a rich, warm palette. This work is signed to the verso. It is presented in a gesso frame with a gilt finish and a hanging wire to the verso.

Wilder M. Darling left his hometown of Sandusky, Ohio to study art with Henry Mosler in Cincinnati, with whom he travelled to Europe in his late teens. Over several trips to the continent he spent time studying with numerous artists, including Mosler, Frank Duveneck in Munich, and Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant at the Academy Julian in Paris. He settled in Holland, establishing a studio in Larens and painting Dutch peasants and genre scenes in his Academic style. At the outset of WWI he returned to the United States and eventually Ohio, where be began teaching painting and drawing, encouraging his students to explore the avant-garde techniques of the time.
