A late 19th to early 20th century oil painting on canvas by listed American artist Caroline Augusta Lord (Ohio; 1860 – 1927). This work depicts a portrait of a handsome, venerable gentleman with an admirable beard and distinguished face. He wears a dark jacket and poses with his large hands folded comfortably over a heavy book in his lap. Artist signature is signed to the lower left. This work is mounted in a moulded wood frame with a gold tone finish.

Lord’s works are represented in the permanent collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum; the Ohio Historical Society; and the Maynard Dixon Living History Museum, among others, as well as in many private collections.

Condition

- painting has been restored with inpainting, notably along lower edge, as well as professional cleaning. Painting remains on original stretcher bars, in newer frame.
