A 1930 alla prima oil painting on canvas titled Cronies by well-listed American painter Arthur William Woelfle (New York/New Jersey/Paris; 1873 – 1936). This energetically painted double-portrait depicts a well-seasoned German couple posing for the artist, the woman smilingly leaning in toward her seated male companion, both of them with bier steins and food on the table before them. Artist signature is signed to the lower right. This work is mounted in a carved wood frame with a gold tone painted finish.

Woelfle studied art at the Brooklyn Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and the Munich Academy. Woelfle spent portions of his career in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New York, exhibiting extensively locally while focusing on portraiture and murals. Woelfle’s career peaked in the mid-30s, when he was awarded the Grant prize from the New Rochelle Art Association, multiple awards from the Allied Artists of America, and a medal from the National Arts Club.
