A mid-century oil painting on board by well-listed American artist Richard Whorf (California/Massachusetts; 1906 – 1966). This industrial cityscape, rendered in heavily muted, thinned pigments, depicts a tugboat chugging along a river in the midst of a storm. Artist signature is signed to the lower right. This work is mounted in a contemporary decorative frame with a distressed silver tone finish.
Whorf was best-known as an actor and director; he starred in prominent Broadway productions and later Hollywood films, including ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ (1942), ‘Keeper of the Flame’ (1942), and ‘Christmas Holiday’ (1944). Painting was his hobby, and he was highly-influenced by the American Regionalist artists, including Grant Wood and Norman Rockwell.
