An oil painting on canvas board titled La Varenne by renowned French Post-Impressionist and Fauvist Albert Marquet (1875-1947), dated 1915. This loosely rendered river landscape features a view of Bords de Marne located in La Varenne. The painting is signed to the lower right in black paint. An inscribed exhibition label from Galerie Druet is adhered to the verso, providing the artist, title, and dimensions of the work. The painting is presented in a gilt and gesso wood frame with elaborate foliate molding.

Associated with the Post-Impressionists and Fauvists, French artist Albert Marquet was life-long friends with Henri Matisee, whom he met in 1890 while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moureau. He is especially known for his landscapes portrayed from a window vantage point, rendered with abbreviated brushstrokes. In addition to Matisse, he exhibited with Fauvists André Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck, among others. The artist also traveled extensively throughout France, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, and North Africa, primarily painting vistas, harbor scenes, and waterfronts. Marquet’s work has been collected and exhibited by numerous prestigious institutions including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.

Condition

- some rubbing along edges; faint spots of accretion scattered throughout; minor paint loss scattered throughout; small faint surface scratches, one more visible to lower center of painting; pinholes are present to for corners of board, but are likely the result of the artist’s working method; wear to frame includes small chips, stains, and scratches scattered throughout; considerable finish loss throughout frame.
