A 1639 antique hardcover volume of The First Part of the Institutes of the Laws of England by Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634), published by Miles Flesher, John Haviland and Robert Young, Assignes of I. More, Esquire, London, fourth edition. Illustrated with engraved portraits to the front of the volume, as well as woodcut illustrations to the title page. Coke was one of the preeminent jurists of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, and his Institutes is an important foundational document of English common law, which has been cited in over 70 US Supreme court decisions. Bound in non original quarter cloth with printed floral paper covered boards.
