Georges Schreiber was born in Belgium and known for his paintings, illustrations, and lithographs. He studied in Belgium and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Early in his career, he worked as a free-lance artist for German newspapers, which he continued until settling in the United States in 1928. Around 1936, Schreiber was employed with the Works Project Administration, and visited 48 states capturing contemporary American scenes of the Great Depression. In addition, he sketched the Bruno Hauptmann kidnapping trial, illustrated books and magazines such as Life and Fortune, and was commissioned by the United States Navy to create paintings for posters during World War II. Schreiber’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, among many others.
