A rare registered and numbered (314) artists’ proof edition titled ‘The Presidents: The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of The Presidents’ published 1901 by The Gravure Company of America, New York and Washington. This impressive folio book contains 24 full-page black and white gravure portraits of the U.S. Presidents from Washington to McKinley with historical commentary on a facing page. Printed tissue guards separate the pages. The book is bound in burgundy morocco and green pigskin with gilt stamped title, morocco U.S. seal and burgundy satin ribbon. Affixed to the blue and gold print endpapers is the publisher’s bookplate noting the book is registered and numbered ‘314’, dated ‘2/2/1902’, and name of book owner. This edition is unique as it includes color impression sketches on the written pages ‘illustrating the historic associations in the life and administration of each President’ (as noted on the verso of half-title page).

Condition

The cover is in fair condition as the front cover is still attached to the hinge, but is split and loose from the spine. The back cover and last page with “McKinley’s Last Speech” is detached. The satin ribbon on the front and back is intact but missing are the ribbon ties on inside covers. There is a small piece of red leather missing from top of seal on front cover. The interior is in good condition as the pages are tightly bound with light foxing.
