Paul Herzel was born in Germany and emigrated with his family to the U.S. at age seven. Having settled in St. Louis, he studied at the St. Louis Art School and began creating sketches, paintings, and sculptural models inspired by the animals he saw at the Forest Park Zoo. After traveling abroad, he moved to New York and studied sculpture at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. In New York, his interest in animals and wildlife continued, as he created artwork inspired by his frequent visits to the Central Park Zoo.
