A late 19th century oil painting on canvas titled A Gallant Stand by well-listed American artist George Frederick Bensell (1837 – 1879). This work features a signature subject portrayed by the artist of frontier genre scene. No visible signature was found on the work. It is presented in a gilt and gesso wood frame. A metal plate is affixed to the lower center of the frame, providing the artist and title of the work. An auction house label is adhered to the verso.

Artist and poet George Frederick Bensell studied with James Reid Lambdin (1807-1889) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he exhibited from 1856 to 1868 and later served as an instructor. Especially known for his history paintings, western frontier scenes, landscapes, portraits, and ‘poetical genre’ scenes, the artist served as the first President of The Philadelphia Sketch Club which was formed in his studio in 1860. In addition, Bensell co-authored, with Samuel Diffield, a twenty-two page poem titled The Artist’s Dream, housed in the collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His work has been collected by several other institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Knohl Collection, and the Germantown Historical Society, among others.

- large spot of in painting present to upper right; small spots of in painting scattered throughout composition; painting has been relined with canvas; three-inch strip of paint loss present to upper center; some rubbing and paint loss along painting edges; craquelure throughout painting; some wear in frame includes small chips, stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
