Oil painting on board
Unsigned
An antique oil painting on linen mounted to board by an unknown artist. The work strongly echoes the Romantic style of American artist Edmund Coates (New York, 1816-1871) and is consistent with his body of work. The image depicts a romantic, idealized European countryside with a small village of quaint stone buildings and a windmill. In the foreground, a lone figure makes his way toward a church beyond a connecting grass bridge between two glistening bodies of water amidst lush trees and blue mountains resting against a blue sky in the background. The painting is not signed and is presented inside its original antique beveled wood frame with scrolled cast gesso applique and a gilt finish. To the verso, a beautiful original antique label remains adhered, reading, “Percy G. Beer / 10 Osborne Road, Southsea: / Printseller and Picture Dealer / Gilder and Framemaker”.
