A late 19th century oil painting on canvas by by Ohio-based artist Thomas Corwin Lindsay (1839-1907). Portrayed with loose brushstrokes and muted hues, this work features a watermill along the bank of pond. The work is signed ‘TC Lindsay’ to the lower right. It is presented in a gilt gesso and wood frame.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thomas Lindsay was a well-known painter of landscapes, animal subjects and occasionally portraits. He displayed an interest in painting from an early age and took to the act of expression quite naturally. He studied in Dusseldorf, Germany then returned to Cincinnati in 1857 where he taught students in his Fourth Street studio and made an earnest living from the sale of his masterful landscapes. Lindsay’s work has been collected and exhibited by the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other institutions.

- paint loss, paint chippin, and rubbing along edges of canvas; craquelure throughout painting; repair patch present to upper right corner of canvas verso; some wear in frame includes scratches, stains, and finish loss scattered throughout.
