Born in Romania, Pfeiffer was three years old when his father left to fight for Russia during WWII. After living for a short time in Austria, he and his mother were forced to flee, traveling in the night and hiding during the day for five months as they worked to reunite with his father. Because of his experience, he felt an immediate kinship to the history of Native Americans, as he was also displaced from his home and had his usual way of life ripped from him and his family.
