Xavier Barile was born in Italy, and immigrated to New York in 1907. After learning English he studied at Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York and eventually enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City where he studied under John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard. He was part of the informal Ashcan School, a group that painted scenes from daily life in New York’s poorer neighborhoods. He exhibited across the United States, at venues including the Whitney Studio Club, The Kit Kat Club, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum and his work is held in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Condition

- minor discoloration and accretion to surface of painting; wear to frame includes scratches, separation to corner joins, cracked molding throughout, edge wear to finish, and chips of missing molding noted to corners and lower right sight edge; tape to verso discolored and peeling; warping, discoloration, holes, and edge wear to sketch papers on verso.
