Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows: “having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind.” After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
One of these pieces, signed by the artist, is a rarity in that Carol only signed about 15% of her art – ‘I don’t sign most of my paintings because I thought that God was painting those pictures. Today, I am finding that I do have an identity. So I’ll sign some of the paintings and drawings if they were done in the absence of God? (Never, God was always present.)’ – Carol’s Artist Statement 2011.
