Oil on canvas
Signed to lower left

An 1895 oil painting on canvas by listed American painter Eudora Hereford (Kentucky/Ohio; born 1860). The painting, completed in Concarneau, France, depicts a mother seated on the grass in the midst of a clearing outside of a wooded area, her sleeping child reclining peacefully beside her. Hereford was active primarily in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she attended the McMicken School of Design and was awarded the gold medal for drawing in 1871. During the years 1883 and ‘84, she taught at the Cincinnati Wesleyan College for Young Women before traveling to Europe to study art until 1886, when she returned to Cincinnati to resume her teaching duties. She resigned in 1889 or ’90 and traveled abroad again to Paris, where she remained until 1897. While in Paris, her painting _Sommeil d’Enfant_ was shown at the 1896 Salon, and she proceeded to exhibit her work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and at the Art Institute of Chigago, before returning to Cincinnati in 1897. Back in Cincinnati, she opened a studio with fellow artist Mary Barstow in the historical Pike Building.
