A mid 19th century oil painting on canvas by well-listed American painter Charles Wilson Knapp (Pennsylvania/New York; 1823 – 1900). Executed in the Hudson River School tradition, this work is dominated by vast mountains and wooded wilderness peacefully integrated with a small cabin on the banks of a river and a figure in a canoe near the foreground. Artist signature is signed to the lower left. The painting is mounted in an antique period wood frame with cast moulding and a gold tone painted finish.

Knapp is best known for his romantic depictions of American farm life along the rivers and shorelines of the North-East. He is considered a prominent White Mountains painter, and he also painted many landscapes from life throughout Philadelphia and the Susquehanna River valley. Knapp’s works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious intitutions, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Robert Hull Fleming Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; New Hampshire Historical Society; and The Woodmere Art Museum, among others.

Condition

- accretion and mild discoloration across painting surface. Mild craquelure across painting. Canvas was later mounted to paperboard. Wear to frame.
