An oil painting on illustration board by listed American artist and wildlife illustrator Douglas Allen (New Jersey, born 1935), dated 1978. This illustration was created to be part of the wildlife publication North American Game Animals (page 259) by author Bryon Dalrymple; published by Outdoor Life Books, New York in 1978. The work features a mountain lion resting in the shade of an elevated rocky terrain. The piece is unsigned, although page number, publication, publisher and date are inscribed to the verso. The composition is presented in a wood frame with a gilt fillet.

Douglas Allen is best known for his wildlife illustrations. He began his formal artistic training in his hometown at the Ford Art School, New Jersey. Upon graduating, Allen further pursued his artistic career and refined his technique while continuing his education at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, working under the likes of artist W.J. Aylward. After meeting listed artist and illustrator Paul Bransom, he moved to Wyoming where he studied at Bransom’s Teton Artist School in Jackson Hole. Subsequently, Allen was hired to participate as an illustrator for two wildlife series in Outdoor Life magazine titled ‘Big Game Animals of North America” and ’North American Game Animals’. He created 55 ink drawings and 30 oil paintings for this commision, including this intricate oil illustration of a mountain lion. His oeuvre is part of the collection of public and private collections including Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradell, New Jersey and the National Museum of Wildlife Art .
