A ceramic plaque titled Around Borinquen, 1400 – No. 10 by Puerto Rican artist Jose Caraballo (1930-1992). Rendered in sunken relief and sgraffito delineations, this work features Taino Indian figures and abstract motifs scattered throughout. Signed ‘Caraballo’ in sgraffito to the mid right, the plaque is presented in a carved and painted wood frame. The title and the artist’s name are embossed to a name plate adhered to the lower center of the frame.

Jose Caraballo was especially known for his work depicting the life and culture of the Taino Indians of Borinquen. He was the President of the Hispanic Arte League and organized the first Latin American Art Biennial in New York City, for which invited famed artist Rufino Tamayo to attend as the guest of honor. Caraballo’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of the City of New York, among others.
