A mid 20th-century oil painting on canvas mounted on board attributed to well-listed American artist Dean Cornwell (1892 – 1960). This well-illustrated work features the spectacle of Christ healing the blind man with various bystanders watching the miracle. The work is signed ‘Dean Cornwell’ to the lower left and is presented unframed.

Known primarily for his illustrations and murals, Dean Cornwell was born in Louisville, Kentucky and began his formal artist training at his local YMCA under the tutelage of American artist Paul Plaschke. His professional career began as a Cartoonist for the newspaper Louisville Herald-Post. Cornwell further pursued his artistic career and moved to Chicago, where he continued his education at the Art Institute of Chicago and simultaneously worked as an illustrator for the Chicago Tribune. Subsequently, he moved to New York refining his technique at the Art Students League and later on at the Harvey Dunn’s school of illustration in Leonia, New Jersey, studying under the likes of listed artist Nicolai Fenchi. Cornwell went on to study in London receiving the training of listed muralist artist Frank Brangwyn, and in doing so established his distinctive, signature painting style and content for which he became recognized. His mural paintings can be found in various public and private institutions including Los Angeles Public Library, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands, The Bethlehem Steel Company, New York’s General Motors Building, the Rockefeller Center and more.
