Dutch Marquetry Walnut Display Cabinet, Early 19th Century
Item Details
A Dutch marquetry cabinet on bombe chest, previously sold at Cowan’s in 2014. The cabinet has a broken arch pediment with a floral carving that has become dislodged, but is included. The cloth lined interior is accessed by a glass paned door framed in walnut. The separate bombe chest base has graduated drawers with angled stiles, on ball and claw feet. The matching pieces are inlaid throughout with floral designs in mixed woods, highlighted with brass hardware. The upper right drawer is branded AJ with a crown and a coat of arms. According to internet sources, this stamp was used in Amsterdam beginning in 1771 in conjunction with the banning of imported furniture into the Netherlands.
