Paul Herzel was born in Germany and emigrated with his family to the U.S. at age seven. Having settled in St. Louis, he studied at the St. Louis Art School and began creating sketches, paintings, and sculptural models inspired by the animals he saw at the Forest Park Zoo. After traveling abroad, he moved to New York and studied sculpture at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. In New York, his interest in animals and wildlife continued, as he created artwork inspired by his frequent visits to the Central Park Zoo. Many of Herzel’s sculptural designs have been sold and reproduced by companies such as Pompeiian Bronze; his original work has been collected by the New York Zoological Society and the Moscow Museum of Modern Western Arts, among other institutions.

Condition

- wear, paint loss stretcher marks and edge wear throughout the edges of painting; toning, areas of uneven discoloration and minor scratches throughout the composition; under UV light examination several areas of inpainting are revealed throughout the composition.
