Born in Illinois, Eldridge Ayer Burbank specialized in portraits of Native American chiefs, painting over 1200 in his lifetime. He studied at the Chicago Art Academy then painted scenic illustrations for Northwest Magazine, requiring him to move to various locations in the American West. The artist furthered his studies in Munich, and became friends with artists Joseph Henry Sharp, William R. Leigh and Toby Rosenthal. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Museum of the America West, among many others.
Condition
- discoloration and accretion to surface; some warping to canvas with billowing away from support board; scratches and wear to frame.
