Savage was born into photography greatness as the niece of Dada artist Man Ray. With the support of her uncle, she studied photography under Bernice Abbott, Man Ray’s assistant, at New School for Social Research, later finishing her education at Bennington College in 1947. After school, Savage apprenticed under Man Ray and refined her photography and printmaking skills. In 1952, Savage held her first exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, continuing to exhibit there throughout the 1960s. Recipient of many accolades including a photography fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Savage is best known for her ability to combine photography with a variety of printmaking processes. Many of her works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and more.
