A mid 20th-century oil painting on board by listed American artist Emlen Etting, Jr. (1905 – 1993). Portrayed with painterly brushstrokes, this work features a loosely-rendered nude woman seated on the ground with a long-stemmed flower. The work is signed ‘Etting’ to the lower left and presented in a simple wood frame with a linen liner. To the verso is a descriptive label and a handwritten dedication from the artist that reads ‘For Miss Sinkler / one of her miraculous / flowers / with love from / Emlen’.

Emlen Etting was a painter, sculptor, and filmmaker who studied French at Harvard University. After obtaining his degree, he traveled to Paris and studied art under the tutelage of Andre Lhote. During World War II, he created sketches of the liberation of Paris that were featured in Fortune Magazine. He also collaborated with Orson Welles to create The Liberation of Paris, for which he recorded and provided commentary on the speeches of Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Charles de Gaulle on August 25, 1944. Later in life, he taught at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia College of Art, Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and Florida Southern College. His work has been collected by multiple museums and elite private collections, including those of Walter H. Annenberg, Helen Hayes, Bernice Wintersteen, and Mary Clark Rockefeller, among others.

- some surface residue and spots of accretion scattered throughout painting; scratch mark present to upper left of painting; some wear scattered throughout frame.
