A mid 20th century mixed media painting on illustration board titled Frontier Scouting Party by listed artist and illustrator Shannon Stirnweis (American, born 1931). This illustration depicts a western figural scene featuring a blonde male and two native Americans vigilantly holding their weapons while they recline on the edge of rocky terrain. The work is signed to the lower right. To the verso, artist’s name, title, and medium are inscribed. The piece is presented in a wood frame.

Shannon Stirnweis is primarily known for his historical western genre illustrations and began his formal artistic training University of Oregon. Upon graduating, Stirnweis further pursued his artistic career and moved to Los Angeles, refining his technique while continuing his education at the Art Center College of Design, working under the likes of artist Pruett Carter. Stirnweis worked as an illustrator in the U.S. Army, Sportsman Magazine, and Field and Stream. His work was been exhibited in various governmental and private organizations including the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Historical Museum, U.S. Coast Guard, University of Texas, University of Wyoming, Historical Society, the Smithsonian and many more.
