A gouache painting on paperboard by well-listed artist Edgar Yaeger (American; 1904-1997), dated 1929. The work depicts the grisaille illustration of a early 20th century luxury car, likely intended as a study for a mural for the state of Michigan. The work is initialed and dated ‘E.L.Y. 1929’ to the lower right. To the upper left corner, an inscription reading ‘1st Art School of Fine Arts, approx 1928’ is present. An artist’s special tribute certificate from the state of Michigan is included to the verso. The composition is presented unframed.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
