A mid 20th century watercolor painting on paper by listed American portraitist and illustrator Richard F. Williams (1908 -1981). This work features a grisaille portrait of a distinguished well-dressed man gazing to the lower left while introspectively holds a glass of whiskey. The piece is signed “D. Wms” to the lower left. A short biographical label about the artist is included to the verso. The composition is not mounted and is presented unframed.

Richard Williams was both a successful commercial artist and fine artist for decades. He graduated from the Buffalo School of Fine Arts and began creating advertising art for newspapers, and later, for advertising agencies. He was commissioned by The Society of Illustrators and was a member of multiple art organizations including the Hudson Valley Art Association, the American Artists’ Professional League, and the New Rochelle Art Association, among others. Later in life, he pursued a career in fine art and became known for his portraits, but also gained recognition for his landscapes and still lifes.
