Samuel Margolies studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League and the Cooper Union Art School, concentrating on painting and doing bronze sculptures before turning to etching in the 1930s. He was known for his numerous depictions of his native New York cityscapes Iand served as an instructor in the Works Progress Administration’s art teaching division. To supplement his income, he produced a series of mostly rural scenes for Associated American Artists, who sold limited edition signed prints through department stores and by mail order. Margolies work is included in numerous collections including the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Georgia Museum of Art.
