An Etruscan Revival form 18K yellow gold and turquoise cabochon pendant. A study in symmetry and detail, this remarkable piece displays pseudo cannetille wirework and expert granulation technique, long considered archetypal of Etruscan goldsmithing at it’s finest. The mirrored pair of winged bezoar goats framing the extraordinary turquoise cabochon is an excellent example of tribute animals noted in gold jewelry and ornamentation of the Etruscan (Italian) and Achaemenid (Persian) Empires both, along with the double handled vessel, and the three dangling orbs, a nod to the archaic era. Ibex, the wild species of goat native to the region, and noted for their oversized horns have long symbolized rain in the Persian culture. Turquoise owes its name to the term turquois, French for ‘Turkish’, the name given to the azure-hued gems in 17th-century trade of Persian turquoise via the Ottoman Empire into the courts and palaces of Europe.
