A mid-to-late 20th century fashion sketch titled Carroll Baker as ‘Harlow’ by renowned American costume designer Edith Head (1897 – 1981). Comprised of graphite, gouache, and marker, this work features the actress in her 1965 role as Jean Harlow. Signed in marker to the lower right and titled in graphite to the upper right, this work is presented under glass with gray matting and housed in a silver-tone metal frame. A label from Regency Galleries is adhered to the verso.
Born Edith Claire Posener, Edith Head was a leading costume designer with a long career in Hollywood. Despite any previous formal training in art design or costume design, she was hired by Paramount Pictures as a costume sketch artist in 1924. Head went on to receive eight Academy Awards throughout her lifetime, and designed some of the most renowned Hollywood fashion images, including Dorothy Lamour in The Hurricane, Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, among numerous others.
